Auto-Sleepers Trident 2/4 berth: |

![]() |
The Auto-Sleepers Trident has been for many people the first introduction to motorhome freedom. It is comfortable for two, yet has four seatbelts and can accomodate children in the small roof space (although a tent or annexe may be preferable). The sturdy VW Transporter base vehicle also helps to make the Trident a desirable used buy - there are still plenty of elderly Tridents out there providing dependable holiday transport. If you want a diesel, you'll need to be looking from around 1992 onwards for the 2.4, 88hp normally aspirated version, and if you want turbo diesel, look from 1996. From 1999 the 2.5 litre, 5 cylinder turbo diesel was the favourite buyers' choice. Be aware that there are two power outputs for this engine, 102hp and 130hp. As for living space, when the cab seats are swivelled and the side door open, the interior feels comfortable with the added benefit of your chosen vista. There are practical facilities like a fridge, hob, grill and sink. Two tables are stored under the rear seat, one with an arm to fit in a socket adjacent to the passenger seat and the other fits into a floor socket in front of the rear seat, using a pedestal leg. The double bed is quick and easy to make up thanks to the sliding mechanism. Utilising the available storage space has to be thought out carefully, especially for longer trips. If not taking bicycles, you could consider using a rear box for bulky items. Some Tridents will be getting high mileages now, certainly if used for dual purpose (ie recreation and day to day transport). This needn' t be a problem provided the vehicle has been properly cared for, with evidence of regular mechanical and habitation servicing. Overall, the Auto-Sleepers Trident wears well. General points to note are that the paint tends to fade, particularly on the hightop roof and decals also fade and peel. Check for rust in older models. Interiors can have faded cab seats, worn carpets and damage to cabinet edgings. Check hightop windows and rooflights for leaks.
